The Ultimate Capri Italy Bucket List
Instagram, thank you for introducing us all to one of the most beautiful cities in the world, CAPRI ITALY! Frequented by celebrities and socialites, this island is a playground for the wealthy and screams old money aesthetic. So when we decided to spend 5 days on the island, I got to live out a personal fantasy of mine, Italian summer with my lover. These days were some of my favorite of our 2 week Italy trip (click here to see where else we stopped along before Capri). Here is the ultimate Capri Italy bucket list of what you should do if you share my similar fantasy…
THIS is your view when you get to CAPRI! You will unload from the high speed ferry from Naples onto the dock. From the Marina Grande you can head to your accommodations by either grabbing one of their signature open air taxis or take the Funicular (their uphill tram). The one way fares are available for purchase for 3 EURO to the right of the end of the dock. Read more about how to navigate the Funicalar here!
We used Airbnb to find an apartment at the top of the rock near the Piazzetta (city center of Capri). Here is the link for our specific room in Villa Aida. This was a private room of a locally owned bed and breakfast run by Paolo, a Capri native. He provided us with coffee and breakfast every morning, and even helped us phone the local police to help us locate my partner’s missing cell phone. He went above and beyond for us as guests so I would totally recommend this spot.
Beaches
One of the things I hear the most that surprises people is that the beaches here are not like the Maldives. The Amalfi Coast “spiaggia” are rocky and pebbly from it’s volcanic history. So if you have baby feet, bring yourself a good pair of water shoes/flip flops you can get wet. So which ones are the best to go swimming and grab a beach chair at?!
Take a dip at Marina di Mulo (less crowded and beach bars), Gradola (beach bar to cliff jump off), Piscina di Venere aka “Pool of Venus” (secluded, reach by boat),
Anacapri
A portion of the island that is higher on the rocky mountain is called Anacapri. Ana- coming from the Greek word “up”. Hike around the garden of the gods, grab a gelato to shop to keep your hands full, and then a lunch at La Zagara in a lemon grove. You make your way up there by scooter, taxi or chairlift. We took a chairlift up and a scooter down, checking out the Blue Grotto from above and other corners of the island. A perfect Italian summer day.
Hire a Boat
Take it easy one day and rent a skipper for the day! Depending on your budget you can rent a private boat tour all the way up to luxury yacht and catamaran tours. We chose to keep it private and within our budget by renting with Capri Blue Boats. Our skipper was entertaining, had wine and snacks, and showed us around the entire island. We rode through the hole in the iconic Faraglioni rocks and went swimming in his favorite diving spots. Unfortunately, we did not have time to go inside the Blue Grotto but if that is something on your Capri bucket list, click here for the best companies!
Day Trip to Positano
Down for an adventure?! Leave your stuff at the Airbnb and spend the day on the main land on famous Amalfi Coast. Positano can be reached by ferry a couple times per day. Look up the earliest ferry here and then plan a day in the hillside, Italian town. Mind that the ferry is seasonal, only open April to October.
We had lunch at Le Sirenuse, rented beach chairs on Spiaggia Positano, and watched the sunset over the coast with a wine on the rocky sidewalks next to the waves crashing on the concrete walls. This beautiful corner of the world is one of my favorites because well, I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
“Positano bites deep.” -John Steinbeck
Eats
There is no shortage of good food in Italy, that’s a given. So really we winged it and either stumbled into the most vibey spots while exploring or got recommendations from the locals. Here’s where I would recommend grabbing a bite that we ended up loving:
Da Paolino- under lemon trees
La Fontelina- beach club
Il Geranio- Mediterranean food and views over Faraglioni
La Zagara- Anacapri
The five days we spent here are seared into my long term memory and be a vacation I will always remember. I plan to return and visit more of the beach clubs and be an absolute potato some time soon. If I get reincarnated, let me be Italian. That’s how much I loved Capri. PLEASE tag me in your adventure if you do any of these things on your Ultimate Capri Italy Bucket List when you go!
