Travel Guide to Savannah, GA

Have you been thinking about planning a road trip?! Is a low country boil under Spanish moss surrounded by historical architecture up your alley?! Then you ideal Southeastern USA bucket list destination is Savannah, Georgia! I recently road tripped down from Nashville (around a 7-8 hour drive) for a 5 day getaway. With it's proximity to Charleston and the coast, the diverse area feels like a USA hidden gem. So here ya have it... Morgo Goes's Travel Guide to Savannah, GA!

About Savannah

Settled as the last colony of the British in the 1730's, Savannah is known as America's first planned city. There are 22 squares within the walls that were planned by the settlers to ensure community and tranquility in the city. The most notable features of the squares are the Spanish moss draped trees and stunning large homes.

In the 1950's, the city planned to tear down these historical homes due to lack of maintenance. But a group of women decided to band together to band together to save the history and restore the town to is historic roots. This diligence to preserve rather than replace is what makes the city so so special.

It is also one of the most haunted cities in the USA. The bloodiest battle of the Revolutionary War was fought on its soil as well as multiple fires, pandemics and Civil War battles. This tragic past is almost palpable as you walk the streets and listen to the tours.

What to See

My first ever trip to Savannah was filled with walking the streets and no plans. Chuck and I met up with some friends who live in Jacksonville for a week of togetherness. So some spots that were on my travel research list were not checked off. But that's just an excuse to go back right? Listed below are all items on that Savannah bucket list.

  • Wormsloe Plantation- tour the historical site of the former home of the Oglethorpe family

  • Walking Ghost Tour

  • Walk to all 22 squares

  • Forsyth Park- where the famous fountain is, make sure to check it out for a morning walk before breakfast at Collins Quarters

  • Paranormal Investigation at the Sorrel Weed House

As I mentioned above, Savannah is super haunted. We visited on a full moon over Halloween weekend so obviously we had to do some sort of ghost tour. We landed on doing a real life paranormal investigation at the Sorrel Weed House. From the hours of 11pm-2am, we were locked down in the dark with nothing but our flashlights and investigative equipment. And we had a couple of experiences. Make sure to DM me on Instagram for the full story!

  • Walk down the Riverfront and check out the steamboat

Shop

We ended up finding the following shops by just walking in. There are main shopping areas on Broughton Street, Whitaker Street, and the City Market.

Eats

There are loads of great restaurants in town! Southern seafood... there's nothing like it. Listed below are all the recommended places by local friends we met at a bar and my own research.

  • The Ole Pink House- recommended to get reservations for the basement for dinner (rumor is the food is better and its haunted!)

Photo Cred: OpenTable

  • The Grey- featured on Master Chef on Netflix, this spot was only offering Sunday brunch when we were there. It is inside a restored 1950's bus station

  • Leopold's Ice Cream

  • Collin's Quarters- brunch, we hit this place up twice while we were there its that good. There are two locations, one being in Forsyth Park!

  • Ordinary Pub- brunch

Drinks

There is one major detail that makes this eatin' drinkin' town that much better... YOU CAN DRINK IN THE STREETS! Literally you can walk into a bar and order a cocktail to go, all completely legal. Needless to say, we took full advantage of this perk which make the walks around the square that much more fun. Here's a list of all the bars we visited and were recommended to us by the locals!

Where We Stayed

We stayed in a gorgeous Airbnb apartment right on Forsyth Park. It was inside one of those token square historic buildings. So of course it came along with its quirks. Click here our exact listing below!
